Homework Policy and Assignment Schedule
Students are required to complete weekly homework assignments and turn them in on time. The weekly homework assignments and due dates are posted in the classroom and do not change very often. The schedule of weekly homework assignments are as follows:
Regular Reading and Writing Sections:
Due on Monday: No assignment
Due on Tuesday: Journal Entry- Students will write 1 complete page in their journal. The topic is assigned and posted in the room.
Due on Wednesday: Grammar Practice Sheet- Throughout the year we will be reviewing grammar. These sheets allow students to practice those skills.
Due on Thursday: Spelling Assignment- This assignment helps students prepare for the spelling test given every Friday. Students will receive their words and the assignment on Monday.
Due on Friday: Mug Shot Sentences- These are sentences that have mistakes in them. During the week, we find the mistakes in class and students rewrite the sentences correctly.
Honors Reading Section:
Due on Monday: No assignment
Due on Tuesday: Independent Reading Journal Entry- Students will write 1 complete page in their journal. See the Independent Reading Journal direction sheet for details about what is expected.
Due on Wednesday: No assignment
Due on Thursday: No assignment
Due on Friday: Critical Reading Packet- This assignment helps students improve their reading skills. Most state assessments test students’ reading comprehension ability with fact-laden reading passages. Most students struggle with these passages. The Critical Reading Packet provides students with an opportunity to practice those skills.
*** As the school year continues, students may also have other assignments and projects in addition to those above; the assignments listed above are what students should expect to be due each week.***
Why I assign homework?
I believe weekly homework assignments are important because they are a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experience in school. I give weekly homework assignments because it reinforces what has been learned and helps to teach responsibility and positive study habits.
What are the students’ homework responsibilities?
Students are required to complete their assignments and then turn them in on time. Homework is graded based on a four point rubric. (Rubric is attached and a copy is posted in the room.) The rubric score is converted into a percentage score for the purpose of grade averaging. If the homework assignment is one day late, then 30 % is taken off the final score. 50 % is taken off homework assignments that are two days late. There is no credit given to homework assignments more than two days late, however the assignment still needs to part of your notebook and should be completed. The previous stated late homework policy is consistent with the seventh grade team.
Weekly homework assignments are 20% of a student’s report card grade.
4 Point Rubric Score to Percentage Score Conversion Chart:
+4 = 100% +3 = 91% +2 = 83 % +1 = 75%
4 = 97% 3 = 89% 2 = 81% 1 = 70%
-4 = 93% -3 = 85% -2 = 77% -1 = 50%What are the teacher’s weekly homework responsibilities?
I will check and assign a grade to every assignment turned in (with the exception of assignments turned in beyond 2 days after the due date- Those assignments are zeroes). I will also always post the weekly assignments and their due dates in the classroom so students will be reminded. I also post the weekly homework assignments on the CMS website.
What are the parents’ weekly homework responsibilities?
Parents are key to making school work a positive experience. Please provide a quiet environment, support and praise. Remind your student to do his or her assignments. Put a schedule of assignments on the refrigerator to help your student remember. Check your student’s assignment notebook to see if there are assignments.
What about the homework coupons?
There will be times when students may forget to bring in their weekly homework assignments. This would be the opportunity to use their “One-Day Grace Period Coupon”. A coupon is given to every student at the beginning of each quarter. These coupons are for the times when we all need a break. However, when the one coupon is gone- it is gone. If your seventh grader loses the coupon it will not be replaced! Warning- the “One-Day Grace Period Coupons” only allow you to have one extra day to complete the assignment without penalty. These coupons can only be used on assignments graded as homework, not on projects.
